Clint Smith was active on the school coaching scene in Napa from 1957 to 1987 as a baseball coach at Napa College, a football and basketball coach at Ridgeview Junior High School in addition to the Napa High School freshman, JV and varsity teams. He came to Napa after successful playing days at Palomar Junior College, San Diego State University and as a professional baseball player in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization. He played baseball, football and basketball in his prep and college days. As with many men Smith’s age, a tour of military duty interrupted his professional baseball career. As an assistant football coach at Napa High, Smith coached Napa’s JV teams to an impressive 28 consecutive wins over a three-year period. Smith is best remembered as a premier baseball coach at Napa High from 1972 to 1985. He also coached American Legion teams from seven years and Napa Little League teams. Perhaps some quotes from Smith’s former players best describe his Hall of Fame credentials:

“Coach Smith really cared about the young men he coached; he loved sports and competition, and devoted a good portion of his life helping athletes reach their potential.” – Bill Buckner
“It’s been an honor to have known and played for one of the greatest coaches and persons there is.” – Dave Cervone
“I have a lot of great memories of all you did – you taught me a lot.” – Bob Porter
“Looking back, I feel fortunate to have had you as a coach and role model.” – Iver Vaaler
