Like current members of the Napa High Athletic Hall of Fame, Eric Tye, Steve Clerici and Steve Hendrickson, all of whom starred as running backs and linebackers, Thomas Sims was the heart of his football team. As a two-year starter Thomas lead his team in tackles in his junior year and was named to the All County team while helping the team to a MEL Championship. As a result of his junior year performance he was invited to the Nike combine held at Stanford where he stood out in both speed and strength drills.

As a senior Thomas was named as the Player of the Year in both Napa County and in the MEL. His senior season statistics were outstanding. As a running back he rushed for over 1,700 yards, scored 23 touchdowns, and made 110 tackles. For his effort he was named to the Sac-Joaquin and Sacramento Bee All Section teams. Additionally, Thomas received statewide recognition when he was named to the All State third team. Clearly Thomas’ contribution on the field was critical to the Napa Indians securing their second straight league title.

Then head coach Jerry Dunlap said of Sims, “He’s a throwback, he’s what you want in a football player. Without question, he’s a name people will remember around here for a long time.”

Thomas went on to play for one year at West Point Preparatory School, and then transferred to Willamette University in Salem, Oregon where he earned a scholarship.

Thomas is married to Katelyn Brace Sims. They have two sons Bo and Mac.
